In addition, immigrants may also be asked to provide:
- A copy of your green card

Can I Get New York City SNAP as an Immigrant?
Many immigrants in New York City do not apply for SNAP benefits because they are afraid it will put their immigration status
at risk.
They are worried that they won’t be able to get back in the country if they leave.
Additionally, some are concerned that if they apply for benefits it could affect their chances of becoming a legal resident or citizen.
Furthermore, many immigrants also worry that a benefits administrator will report them to the Department of
Homeland Security (DHS).
However, this is not true.
By law, city agencies in New York are not allowed to ask you about your immigration status or disclose your immigration status to anyone.
Undocumented immigrants cannot get most state and federal public benefits, but these benefits are still available to their citizen children.
For example, if you are an undocumented immigrant, you are not eligible for SNAP or Food Stamps, but you can apply for Food Stamps for your citizen children.
Immigrants that are Eligible for SNAP
In general, only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or immigrants with a qualified alien (also known as
qualified immigrant) status can qualify for federal, state, and city benefits, including Food Stamps.
The following immigrants are considered qualified and can get SNAP or food stamps:
- Lawful Permanent Resident (Permanent Resident Alien or Green Card Holder)
- Lawfully residing active duty service member or honorably discharged veteran and their families
- Refugee
- Asylee
- Immigrants whose deportation or removal is being withheld
- Cuban or Haitian entrant
- Amerasians
- Trafficked immigrant (T visa holders)
- Immigrants granted parole in the United States (for at least one year)
- Battered immigrant spouses and children of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents
