However, to fully determine your eligibility for benefits, you need to submit a New York SNAP Application. 

There are two pre-screening tools available in New York. One for New York City (ACCESS NYC) and another for New York state (My Benefits NY).

Use the pre-screening tool appropriate to where you live.

ACCESS NYC Food Stamps Eligibility Tool

To find out how to use the New York City Pre-Screening Tool (ACCESS NYC), follow the step-by-step instructions provided below:

Step 1 – Visit the ACCESS NYC website

Visit the ACCESS NYC website at access.nyc.gov. Once on the website, click the yellow “Am I Eligible” button.

Step 2 – Select your Benefits

Next, select the benefits you wish to determine your eligibility for from the list provided.

Once complete, click the “Continue” button at the bottom of the page.

Step 3 – Provide your Personal Information

On the next page, agree to the Terms and Conditions.

After that, you will be asked to provide more information about yourself. This includes your age and zip code.

Step 4 – Provide your Income and Expenses

Next, you will be asked to provide information regarding your income and expenses.

To find out how to use the New York State Pre-Screening Tool (MyBenefits NY), follow the step-by-step instructions provided below:

Step 1 – Visit the MyBenefits NY website

Visit the My Benefits NY website at www.mybenefits.ny.gov. Once on the website, click the “Am I Eligible” section located on the far-right of the page.

Step 2 – Select your County

On the next page, agree to the Terms and Conditions. After that, select the county where you live in New York from the drop-down menu.

Once complete, click the “Continue” button at the bottom of the page.

Step 3 – Provide your Personal Information

Next, you will be asked to provide more information about yourself. This includes your name, age, sex, and number of people in your home.

When complete, click the green ” Next” button.

Step 4 – Complete the Prompt

After that, you will be asked to provide more information about yourself and each person in your household.

How to Apply for New York Food Stamps

If you have reviewed the New York SNAP Eligibility Guidelines and believe you may qualify for EBT benefits, the next step is to submit your application for food stamp benefits.

To apply, there are four ways you can submit your NY SNAP Application – online, over the phone, in-person, and by mail.

The application instructions are different for those residents that live in New York City.

Option 1 – Apply Online

New York City Residents

Option 2 – Apply by Phone

New York City Residents:
To apply for food stamps in New York City by phone, call the Human Resources Administration at (718) 557-1399.
Representatives are available to help you apply Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 5:00PM.
All Other New York State Residents:
To apply over the phone, call the Department of Social Services at 1-800-342-3009.
Representatives are available to help you apply Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.

Option 3 – Apply by Mail/Fax

New York City Residents:
You can download NYC SNAP Application and fill it out.
All Other New York State Residents:
You can download the NY Food Stamps Application and fill it out.

Option 4 – Apply in-Person

New York City Residents:
You can apply for food stamps in New York City in person by visiting a NY Human Resources Administration office near you. To locate one, click here.

What Happens After You Apply?

After you apply for food stamps in New York, you must complete an interview with a representative at the Human Resources Administration (HRA) or Department of Social Services (DSS).

Your interview may be over the phone or face-to-face at a local county office.

You will receive a letter in the mail with more information regarding your food stamps interview.

If you are elderly or physically unable to travel for a face-to-face interview, you can apply for a waiver.

Waivers are granted on a case-by-case basis based on hardship.

If your waiver request is granted, the face-to-face interview will be replaced with a phone interview.

During the interview, and you will be required to provide verification of your income and expenses with certain documentation.

How long will it take to receive NY Food Stamp benefits?

If your New York SNAP Application is approved, you will start receiving benefits no later than 30 days from the date you submit your application.

In addition, once you are approved for food stamp benefits, you will receive a NY EBT Card in the mail.
