Will New York Issue Extra Food Stamps Next Month?

Yes, the current COVID-19 emergency declaration, which was set to expire on October 15, 2022, was recently extended by the Biden Administration for another 90 days, through January 2023.

Therefore, states that are currently issuing extra SNAP benefits will be expected to issue benefits in November 2022.

Additionally, based on the recent extension of the COVID-19 emergency declaration, New York state will likely continue to issue extra food stamps benefits through February 2023.

Will I get extra SNAP benefits?

YES, everyone who receives New York SNAP benefits will receive an Emergency Allotment (EA).

How much you will get in Extra SNAP benefits (Emergency Allotment) depends on the following:

  • 1) your household size, and
  • 2) if you are already getting the maximum benefit amount for your household (see maximum allotment chart below).

If the SNAP benefits you got in October were less than the maximum amount for your household size, your EA will bring you up to the maximum benefit.

For example, if you are a 3-person household and got $400 in SNAP, you will get $340 to bring you up to the $740 maximum benefit.

However, if you got the maximum SNAP benefit amount for your household size in October, you will get an EA of $95.

There is no extra paperwork needed to receive Emergency Allotment benefits. You will get your EA automatically.

See the New York SNAP Payment Schedule for when regular food stamps benefits are deposited each month.

How long will Extra SNAP benefits Last?

Extra Food Stamps Allotments are tied to the federal Public Health Emergency, which has currently been extended through January 2023.

According to ABC News:

“The Biden administration said Thursday that the COVID-19 public health emergency will continue through Jan. 11 as officials brace for a spike in cases this winter.”

Whether the emergency declaration is extended beyond January 2023 depends largely on whether COVID-19 cases dramatically increase this winter or perhaps due to the arrival of a COVID-19 strain that is more contagious and dangerous than expected.

60 Day Notice

However, the HHS has promised states a 60 days advance notice before the COVID-19 emergency declaration is ended.

This means that it is reasonable to expect that extra SNAP benefits will be issued through February 2023 at least.

Also, we will not know the definite end date of the extra SNAP program until we get the 60-day notice from the HHS.
